It’s no secret that Maxim magazine releases a list of the hottest 100 women every year. And it’s no surprise that 2014 isn’t any different. But there are several surprises in this year’s list, one of which is causing some to question the credibility of Maxim’s choices.
Victoria’s Secret Angels top Maxim 100
Known for her “leginess” and blue eyes, 25-year-old supermodel Candice Swanepoel was named the hottest woman of the year. The Victoria’s Secrets Angel opened the first Victoria’s Secret Store in Canada in 2012. And according to Forbes, she is one of the richest models in the world. The South African beauty is joined by fellow angels Alessandra Ambrosio (#7) and Cara Delevingne (#10) in Maxim’s top ten.
Runner up: A very pregnant Scarlett Johansson
Rumors of pregnancy were confirmed earlier this month, but they didn’t keep actress Scarlett Johansson from coming in second on Maxim’s list. Universal Studios announced Lucy, in which Johansson stars would premiere 2 weeks earlier than originally planned. Speculations for the decision include box office competition, and not the pregnancy, but no reason has been confirmed. Johansson and her fiancé Romain Dauriac are due in August.
Absent from the top ten was last year’s winner, Miley Cyrus. She was ranked #25. While her sex appeal rating may have dropped, Miley’s still making headlines. Rumors of drug overdose and pregnancy continue to circulate around her hospitalization last month. And, she was granted a temporary restraining order over the weekend against a passionate fan. The man was arrested earlier this month for stalking Cyrus. He believes Miley’s music speaks to him personally and swears he will not stop trying to meet Cyrus until he either succeeds or dies. He is currently in a mental institution awaiting a hearing. Never a dull moment in the Cyrus world!
The top ten come from a wide variety of countries, but no Black or Asian women made the top 10. 8 of the top 10 are white. The other 2 are of Hispanic descent. Rihanna, a singer who is part black, was ranked #11. And Beyonce, who became the highest earning Black musician in history last month, was ranked #21. The absence of women of color in the top 10 is causing several groups to question Maxim’s top ten decisions. Maxim has not responded to the objections.
