Cupcakes are quick to bake and fun to decorate. Because they are small, you don’t have to worry about a large decorating plan like you do for a cake. Some of the best parts of summer work well as inspiration for the cupcake decorations.
The summer months mean spending lots of time enjoying the warm rays of the sunshine for most people. Why not use the glowing sun as inspiration for your cupcake decorations? The cupcakes are already round so it’s not too difficult to turn them into suns. Cover the cupcakes with bright yellow frosting. Make the sun’s rays by dipping straight pretzels into melted yellow chocolate wafers. You can find the wafers at craft stores in the cake decorating section. Arrange the dipped pretzels around the edge of the cupcake.
Hit the Beach
Nothing says summer like the beach. Use blue frosting to cover the tops of the cupcakes to create the water. Add some crushed graham crackers on one half of the cupcake as the sand. A paper drink umbrella can double as a shade umbrella on the cupcake. Add a gumball as a beach ball and some teddy bear graham crackers as the people to finish off the look.
Watermelon is a classic summer fruit. Use it as the inspiration for the cupcake design. Frost the cupcake with bright pink frosting to look like the inside of a watermelon. Add a few mini chocolate chips and the watermelon seeds. If you want, add a ring of green frosting around the edge of the cupcake as the rind.
Snow Cone or Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes
These ideas are similar and make the cupcakes resemble other fun summer desserts. The first idea uses snow cone cups. Slide the baked cupcakes down into the snow cone cups. Frost the cupcakes in bright colors. Sprinkle them with colored sugar to look like the ice of a snow cone.
For ice cream cupcakes, you bake the cupcakes in an actual ice cream cone. Use flat-bottomed cones for the best results. Arrange the cones in cupcake pans to keep them separated. Pour the cupcake batter into the cones and bake as directed. Be careful when moving the pan, as the cones can tip over easily. Decorate the cupcakes with icing to look like ice cream.
Instead of putting the icing on top, this decorating idea puts it in the middle so the cupcake looks like a hamburger bun. Slice the cupcakes in half so you have a top and a bottom. Spread a thick layer of chocolate frosting inside to make the burger. Add a thin layer of yellow frosting as the cheese. Drizzle on red and yellow frosting for ketchup and mustard. You can use fondant to make shredded lettuce, pickles, tomatoes or other toppings. Place the top half on the cupcake to complete the bun.
