Dealing with stress on a regular basis is more common than you may think, with over 70 percent of Americans reporting regular physical and psychological symptoms of stress. Some people like to deal with their regular stress with a cigarette break, or a drink too early or frequently, or perhaps with something even more harmful to your health. Others turn to expensive and relatively unknown prescription drugs. There are however, several healthy ways of dealing with stress without breaking the bank, with one of the easiest and most effective ways being music. Most people already have way of listening to music without having to pay anything and if/when they do, it is quite inexpensive.
There have been several scientific studies that positively connect music to stress relief, whether it be listening to music or playing a musical instruments of some sort. Some of these studies show a relaxed melodic type of music like classical is best for calming effects but there are many that show many genres can work as long as it is a genre you enjoy.
One such example of seeing positive effects on stress by listening to ones favorite music regardless of genre is a study done by researchers at the University of Maryland Medical Center. They found that when the subjects listened to their favorite music, “The inner lining of the blood vessel relaxed, opened up and produced chemicals to do this that are protective to the heart, It gives us an overall feeling of a good well being, a sense of euphoria in some cases” according to Dr. Michael Miller of the University of Maryland Medical Center. The same study also found that listening to the same song repeatedly can lessen it’s positive effects.
So the next time you’re feeling stressed, before you consider going to a doctor or some form of self-medication, why not skip cost and risk and give listening to some music a shot.
