I have to tell you, I have a unique take on procrastination. Yes, I am one of the world’s worst procrastinators. It used to drive me insane! I tried everything.
I tried meditation. I tried hypnosis. I tried just making myself do it. I read books and went on the internet looking for solutions. Nothing worked! It was hopeless…was I just lazy? No because when I had a deadline to make, I always got it done. And you know what was surprising? It always came out great. That started me thinking??
Who were these people who define procrastination? Merriam Webster defines it as: to be slow or late about doing something that should be done: to delay doing something until a later time because you do not want to do it, because you are lazy, ect.
Who are they to call me lazy? They don’t know me? I picture these people who defined procrastination as uptight Obsessive Compulsive (OCD) types; people who can’t relax and hate to see others relax. How dare you define me because I don’t meet your standards for “productive?” So what did I do?
I rebelled! I am a procrastinator and I am proud of it. I get the work done and I do a great job. I don’t fret about deadlines or getting it done weeks before it is due, I always get it done. So I stopped stressing about it and just accepted that I am a procrastinator.
Researching this topic on the internet only proved to me that everyone wants to fix a procrastinator and everyone has their own ideas on how to do that. No wonder we feel inadequate, imperfect and ineffective, we are letting others define us. Well not anymore! Are you with me…?
Now when I have goals to achieve, I set a deadline. If it is a class I am offering, I set the date before I prepare for the class then I know that I have to be ready by that date. If it is something like spring cleaning my home, I let my husband know that I will have it accomplished by a certain date. It may mean that I spend 24 hours straight cleaning but it still gets done. I set deadlines for everything and you know what? It all gets done.
So all you OCD Type A personalities out there…Hear me and hear me well; There is new bread in town and we call ourselves the Procrastinators. We always get the job done but we follow our own time line. We don’t stress or obsess and we live longer lives.
