Whether you’ve changed sizes, had a baby, started a new job or just want a fresh look, building a wardrobe from scratch is a lot of work. Finding the right fits, colors and pieces could be a pretty big task. As a fashion and beauty expert, I have not only reinvented my wardrobe many times, but the wardrobe of my clients. Here are my tips for starting your wardrobe from scratch. This is a guide for ladies, but men can also adapt the advice to their needs.
The most important part of any wardrobe are basics. For casual wear basic tees and tank tops are the foundation for most outfits. Whether you like thin or thicker straps, pick up tanks or camisoles in basic colors like white, cream and black. I also love using navy as a basic, so grabbing a navy one is a great option too. After tanks, I choose basic v neck tees in the same colors, but you can also choose crew neck ones as well. For business looks, basic camis or tanks are important pieces as well. Choose ones that are more structured and provide more coverage for office environments.
Casual layering pieces, like hooded knit jackets or denim jackets are the next basic piece. I like to have a black zip front hooded jacket, as well as a couple fun colors. If you don’t like hooded jackets, a denim or faux leather jacket can make your casual look more you. Another option can be to wear long sleeved tops underneath tees to help create a layered look.
Business layering pieces should always include a blazer or cardigan. I recommend getting a blazer in every basic color that fits well and is versatile. If you’re on a strict budget, start with a black blazer and add more as you go. A blazer should fit snug, but not tight in the shoulders and hit at your wrist on the sleeve. Cardigans are another option if you like lighter or looser fits, and come in the same basic hues.
The basic bottom for casual wear is jeans. Every girl needs a great fitting pair of jeans but you only need a couple pairs to get started. Based on your needs, like if you need more room in the hip or the waist, choose a style that suits your personality. I recommend every woman have at least two pairs of darker wash jeans and one medium or light pair. You can choose to splurge or save money on your denim. Even the cheapest jeans, when cut right, are flattering. If you’re stumped on leg openings, boot cut is the most flattering on every woman.
For business bottoms, you want to start with a pair of black trouser pants. I prefer ones with a wider leg opening to allow for moving around easily. Be sure to get the correct length and when you try them on at a store, wear shoes you think you’ll probably pair with the pants. Again, if you’re on a budget you can get away with one or two pairs, so choose ones that will wash and wear easily. You can also opt for a skirt if you prefer, but make sure it isn’t too tight in the hip.
For casual looks, simple necklaces or bracelets work well to top off an outfit. Choose plain or simple chain necklaces, bangle bracelets or even scarves to help give a simple look more pop. Another route you could take is to buy bold, chunky necklaces that can be worn with any tee. This still keeps the casual feel but gives you more of a fashion edge. For shoes, sneakers or sandals are my go to for days off, but whatever feels the best to you is a good option. If you’re on a budget, one good pair of sneakers and one pair of sandals are all you need.
For business looks, classy and simple pieces are the perfect match. Opt for one or two simple gold or silver necklaces that can be worn with multiple outfits. You can also opt for extremely long, chunky chains that help give a long lean line to the body. For shoes, choose one pair of sensible dress shoes and if you can wear sandals at work, a sandal. I always opt for black with dress shoes because they look great with any outfit.
No matter where you’re at in life, picking up these basic pieces can help you get started with your new wardrobe. Be sure to pair each outfit off with a hair style that helps you feel the most confident. As you have more budget for clothing, you can start adding fun colors and trendy pieces. Pretty soon, you’ll have an incredible wardrobe that all your friends envy.
