As the alleged birthplace of St Patrick, Wales is an ideal location to celebrate Ireland’s most beloved Saint. And what better way than with a pint or two in one of the numerous Irish (or honourary Irish) bars in the country’s capital?
Dempsy’s Irish Bar, Castle Street
Hosting live music most days of the week, Dempsy’s is no stranger to a lively crowd and on St Patrick’s Day is likely to be even livelier. To help get the celebrations into full swing, there will be traditional Irish music playing live all day.
Owned by Welsh brewery Brains, there are a large selection of draught ales, as well as the traditional Guinness. As a special offer for one day only they are offering a voucher for a free 50ml measure of Baileys, in a number of their pubs.
O’Neill’s, Trinity Street, St Mary Street
Aside from their campaign to get St Patrick’s Day recognised as a national holiday (surely the day after would be more appropriate?), O’Neill’s will be hosting a number of events over the weekend to prepare for the big day at not one, but two, locations in the city centre.
Things kick off on Friday with the Welsh three-piece, The Imposters providing live music and playing “all your rugby, party and Irish favourites!”
Saturday will be dominated by rugby and with Wales playing Scotland in the capital there is guaranteed to be a good atmosphere. So where better to watch the Irish play the French?
On Sunday, they will be hosting the annual Join The Jig, with a troupe of Irish dancers. Feel free to join in, or simply enjoy the performance.
For anyone fortunate enough to have the Monday off, things kick off at 10am with “a proper Irish style shin dig”.
Please check each pub’s website for specific times. St Mary Street, Trinity Street
Whilst there might be no obvious connection between Australia and Ireland, it hasn’t stopped this Aussie bar from hosting a two-day celebration. Expect a lively crowd.
But for those who fancy a sit down, you can book a table with their St Patrick’s Day package, which can save you up to 30% on food and drink. If you so desire, advance booking offers the opportunity to avoid those busy queues at the bar by buying food and drink in advance, or set up a pre-paid tab.
The ideal location for those who want to celebrate St Patrick’s Day, but prefer something trendier. As well as Guinness, Buffalo will be offering two-for-one cocktails.
So however you would like to celebrate the day, Cardiff has something for everyone.
