This year we planted a garden in a very sunny area in the backyard. Because it is so sunny, this garden needs to be watered fairly often, just to make sure the plants all have enough water so they will grow well.
When we had the garden area tilled up the person who tilled it up told us they had a sprinkler system they could sell us. At first I said no because after paying to have the garden area tilled up I did not have enough left to do that. However, after seeing how difficult it was to water the whole garden adequately I changed my mind.
So the first thing about a sprinkler system and a large garden I learned was the importance of needing a sprinkler system. When you have a large garden a sprinkler system is helpful.
The second thing I learned is someone needs to remember to turn the water off after the garden has been watered well. Leaving it on overnight leads to a flooded garden. I think a timer on a garden sprinkler system would be a wonderful idea.
The third thing that I learned is there are several different types of sprinkler systems, the kind that lay on top of the ground, and the type that are buried. The type that is buried is better because you do not risk running over the lines with a lawnmower when the hose that goes to the sprinkler go to the garden.
The fourth and most important thing I think I’ve learned from the current sprinkler system we are using is we proper spacing. To work well I think the sprinkler system we are using should be kept more in the center of the garden. I also think due to the size of our garden using more than one sprinkler would work better.
Next year if we have a garden, I believe a soaker type sprinkler system that is on a timer will more efficiently meet our needs. If we owned our own property, a buried sprinkler system on a timer is what I would put in. As it would be more efficient and there would be less water wasted.
Living in a rental house using a timer with the sprinkler system we have now would be best. If we live here another year and have another garden, we will invest in a timer.
