Spring fishing at Arizona’s Willow Bay
While others are looking for the “Cool”, We are planning “Hot” fishing for those not so elusive “Huge Stripers”
Well what can I say, when my oldest calls I just know it’s about fishing and his call the other day was no different.
We began our conversation with the talk of our last fishing adventure in southern Utah and decided we were both getting the itch again, after all , it had been a few weeks since we had gotten home. We thought of the possibility of catching a half day boat out of San Diego for a little ocean fishing however we agreed it would be best when all three of the boys and myself could string a few days together for a little family vacation.
I guess we just had a desire to catch some “Big Ones”, ten pounds and up so with visions of twenty and thirty ponders in our minds, the closest spot we could figure was “Willow Beach” for some of those record “Stripers”. Fish of twenty to thirty pounds are somewhat common in this area with the Record Striper of sixty pounds being caught not far from here, our dreams had validity.
Having never fished for the stripers that inhabited the Colorado River area I decided to do some research on the area known as “Willow Beach”. As my research progressed I found that the area was also very good for trout as well, which is why big stripers are often caught on trout plugs. As an added bonus there is also a fish hatchery that releases trout every Friday so the area is great for Friday thru Sunday fishing, for both trout and stripers.
Now while we have the “Big Boys” in our minds, Willow Beach also plays home to both large and small mouth bass, catfish, walleye and crappie. With such an assortment of game fish available, we are envisioning a near guaranteed catch weekend. And while the “Big stripers” are what we seek, it is the catch that excites us.
With very little recent data (past few days) as to catch, our confidence remains high and our gear collection abounds so the next few days will be sorting and categorizing, you know, this for this and that for that as the excitement grows until we depart early Friday morning.
So keep checking in and we will give you a full report next week! What can you say, family, fishing and fun. You got to love it !
