If you look into any hairstylist’s closet, you will see a common theme – black. There are many reasons that black is the stylist “uniform.” Black is a great neutral color that looks professional, but doesn’t distract from the client’s hair when you are standing behind them. Some salons even have a black dress code. And most importantly, if you get bleach on your black clothes, you can just fill the spot in with a black sharpie.
Now that the weather is warming up, wardrobes are brightening up as well, and even black-loving hairstylists can infuse a little spring into their look.
Scarves. Scarves are a great accessory to brighten up an outfit and add some color to black outfits. Infinity scarves are great for a hairstylist because there aren’t any “tails” to hang down and get in the way. If you have worn black for so long you don’t know what colors to choose, reference the Pantone Spring colors for 2014.
Nail Polish. Manicured nails not only look more professional, they are also a great way to add a little color to an outfit. The OPI spring collection is called Brazil and features teal, nude, yellow, taupe, pink, coral, lavender, and red shades that are perfect for a spring manicure. Nail art is a big trend again this spring. Anything goes, from having nail art on one or two nails, to half moons.
Colored shoes. Your salon dress code may require you to wear black, but nothing adds a pop of color like shoes. Ballet flats are available in an endless range of colors and patterns, or even loafers or boat shoes.
Colorful Glasses. There are a multitude of web sites where you can buy dirt cheap frames for your glasses, so why not mix it up a little bit and try some fun colors? Teal is the perfect color for spring, or maybe a purple frame. Sometimes you can find frames and lenses for less than $20 each, and at that price you can afford to experiment.
Jewelry. If scarves aren’t your thing, try some spring-colored jewelry for a little flair. Gold is a popular color for spring in the jewelry world, as well as primary colors. Try a bold bangle bracelet or statement necklace.
Makeup. Makeup is always a great way to show your creativity and use whatever color you can imagine. Sugarpill Cosmetics is a favorite brand for bold, highly pigmented colors. If the spring runways are any indication, bold oranges, blue, gold, and rose will be popular choices. Blue liner is a must-have this year. The great part about being in the beauty industry is that you can be as bold, or as classic with your makeup look as you feel like.
As you pull your old faithful black outfit out of the closet tomorrow, challenge yourself to add a little spring to your palette.
