For these spring-cleaning jobs, you are focusing on unclogging and cleaning where you clean. You also get to play a bit of the mad scientist role with cleaning your drains.
Normally one does not mix baking soda with vinegar because of the fizz factor, but this is one time when you should. You are going to put into your drain the following items in this exact order to clean and unclog all of your drains.
- 1. 1 cup of water
- 2. ¼ cup of baking soda
- 3. ¾ cup of white vinegar
Let this mixture fizz and brew for about twenty minutes. It is fun to watch! Then follow it with one cup of boiling water. Run the water to see if it drains quickly enough for your taste. If need be, repeat the process.
Wipe the inside of the machine with a rag. Then add a cup of white vinegar to the washing machine. Set it on the hot/white cycle and let it run as if you were washing clothes.
Then once the cycle finishes, wipe out the machine tub again. Make sure you also wipe the detergent holder and other loading areas of the machine. This time run the machine completely empty. It should be free of scum and dirt build up when it finishes with the cycle.
Take a damp cloth (white vinegar and water) and wipe out the inside of the dryer drum. Next remove the lint holder and wipe out the inside area (where the lint container normally sits). Finish by running the lint holder through the dishwasher on a short cycle. Insert it back in after it has air-dried. Leave a dryer cloth or a cloth soaked in Fabuloso in the dryer for a few hours to make it fresh. Remove it before you use the dryer.
Make sure the machines that clean and drain for you are clean and working at full capacity. These chores should be a part of your spring-cleaning agenda.
