After a long winter of driving, is your car “the scene of the grime,” with an oily haze on the windshield, coffee stains on the console and food crumbs between the seats? By following these five steps, you can get it cleaned and refreshed for spring without spending a great deal of time or money.
What you will need:
- Glass Cleaner. Try a green cleaning fluid such as “Green Works”, natural glass and surface cleaner, it works just as well as ammonia-based cleaners without any irritating fumes.
- Microfiber wipes or old towels. You can save a few bucks by cutting up old towels for wipes.
- Toothbrush. This helps remove stubborn stains.
- Scrub brush with stiff bristles.
- Long screw driver or chopstick
Clear the space
First, remove all the big junk to put in the recycling or the trash. Then take out the floor mats and put them off to one side.
Sit shotgun for an easier reach
You will be working from high to low, so any dirt that falls down to lower areas can be vacuumed in the last step.
Clean the inside of the front windshield by sitting on the passenger side. This position makes it easier to reach behind the steering wheel and clean. Spray your folded towel and wipe the glass, so you see the back of your hand while you wipe. Once you wipe the glass with window cleaner let the glass dry. When you’re done with the front windshield, go around and clean the rest of the windows.
Cleaning the Dash
You can wipe down the dash and dashboard using your green surface cleaner. You can use the toothbrush with soft bristles on any tough stains. If you can easily remove any knobs on the dash- go ahead, because it will look better to clean behind rather than around them.
Clean out tight spaces.
Before vacuuming the floor and seats, take a long screwdriver or a chopstick and slide it between the seats and the console to flip any out any small items that can’t be reached by the vacuum hose. Then vacuum the seats and the floor of the car. Next you can loosen the soil in the floor mats with a stiff brush and either vacuum or blast out the dirt with an air hose. Then you can put the floor mats back in place.
You will feel better, and drive safer because you have eliminated the “scene of the grime” in your car.
