I, and almost everyone I know, for one, will never ever miss the Charlotte Bobcats. After this article, I will probably never mention or think of them again. We all went wild when Michael Jordon announced that the Charlotte Bobcats would change their names to the Charlotte Hornets. Once again, the ‘Hornets’ can sit back on their throne in the Queen City to be adored by the faithful fans that never stopped believing in them.
Growing Up with the Hornets
When I think of the ‘Hornets’, I picture Kendall Gill, Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning, Muggsy Bogues, and Dell Curry. No matter what happens, those players will always be the ‘Hornets’ to me. Mostly, I can never forget watching the playoff games in 1993 while visiting my grandmother for an extended summer vacation. Since she was an ex high school basketball player who earned a scholarship for her talent in the sport, you better believe we watched every playoff game that summer. I will never forget the excitement I felt when Alonzo Mourning made the game-winning shot with only a little over 3 seconds left on the clock. My 10-year-old self felt like he saved the world.
Departure of Our Beloved Team
Alonzo Mourning, along with the Charlotte Hornets saving the world, is a moment and feeling that I can distinctly place as an experience I can distinctly recall. After that game, my brother and I played basketball every day. Of course nothing ever came out of it, but it made us feel powerful to play like the Charlotte Hornets. We went to their games and they came to our schools. Imagine our dismay when the Charlotte Hornets moved to New Orleans and left us as if they weren’t our heroes. Even worse, imagine the horror the fans endured when the NBA announced the arrival of the Charlotte Bobcats. It was not even a fitting name, but I digress!
Fans are delighted that the Charlotte Hornets have returned. Record sales of team gear and merchandise were reported. Charlotte now feels like a complete city again with a richer history with the return of the ‘Hornets’. I hope we never lose them again and vow to do my duty as a fan to make sure they stay in the Queen City forever.
