Fans of “The Voice” should be familiar with indie singer/songwriter Will Champlin from last year, what with his unmistakable vocal and overall artistic image becoming synonymous with the type of contestant who would never give up and eventually surprise us all by becoming, quite literally, the last man standing. Ironic then that Mr. Champlin’s second single released since coming from off of “The Voice” (the first being “Eye of the Pyramid”) is entitled just that. Sure, the tune is more of a sonic dedication of love to a special individual, but it could also be taken as a tribute to his fans for taking him to the finale of said much-beloved reality competition show, which adds an extra rewarding layer to the whole ensemble for those #Champs who have been following him since pretty much the beginning. All of that playful talk aside, however, “Last Man Standing“ exhibits just how far Champlin has come as a vocalist, songwriter, and overall musical artist even since his last mainstream TV appearance just a few months back.
The first thing listeners of the tune will recognize is the sheer amount of instruments coming together to set the track’s whole infrastructure in place as the first verse builds into the chorus, summoning all manner of means of instrumentation not much unlike the newly famous DJ Avicii on his hit tune “Wake Me Up“, featuring a variety of folk-ready string instruments and backing melodies paired not-so-orthodox-ly with a hefty pop/rock distance percussion, light dubstep synth, and even a pair of Irish bagpipes about two-thirds of the way into the composition. It all comes together a bit more organically than a track produced by said Avicii, though, and in many ways is even doubly as impressive when you realize that Champlin plays all of the instruments other than the bagpipes on this single– even the impeccably solid electric guitar solo on the bridge! Even with the instrumentation having been birthed into an intense production, the vocals laid on the track are equally as impressive, bringing about the ferocity and fire with which Will engaged his cover songs with on The Voice every week with an extra dollop of passion for good measure. His head voice has been developed into something surprisingly strong and, on the overall, his range has improved and reached the level of a truly versatile pop/rock artist over what nearly seems like overnight.
“Last Man Standing“ ultimately is far from just the typical pop/rock ballad that dares to pull together EDM and roots influences as is so popular in the modern era; it is a statement of who Will Champlin truly is as an artist and how far he’s come in the short time that the world has been exposed to him. It’s a validation that, indeed, he deserved his spot over initial front-runners as a Voice finale-getter, as well as any success that’s to come to him in the future.
