American Idol alum James Durbin will be releasing his latest full-length studio album, ‘CELEBRATE’, this coming April, and along with it have come a couple of choice singles. The first was “Parachute”, which I reviewed last November to a warm and welcoming reception. Now, James is back with his latest single release in the form of titular track “Celebrate”, which effectively takes Durbin’s promise for a more psychedelic pop route and runs with it. It’s an introduction to a new sound for James, but with a bit of an open mind, you can realize the track for how high a production caliber it is actually held at.
The first listen will always be a slightly off-kilter experience for past fans. Certainly, “Celebrate” marks a major departure into the realm of something more pop than alternative for the man who made his mark be known as a hard-rocking metal enthusiast both on the Idol stage and across much of his debut album, ‘Memories of a Beautiful Disaster’. However, that doesn’t mean it’s bad by any means. In fact, “Celebrate” is the type of track that grows on you with each consecutive listen in a rather infectious manner. When you slide on a pair of solid headphones and give it another good three minutes and forty seconds of your time, you’ll start to recognize it for the sweet hooks it maintains throughout the showing, plus how impressive James’ voice really can be at the tip of its range. His falsetto is put front-and-center like never before, and that much deserves a good round of applause for the young artist in himself.
The expansion of his already impressive vocal range is both honorable and impressive, as it makes for a surprisingly comforting listen once you get used to the radically new style his sound is taking. At the end of the day, when you really think about it anyway, rock is all about something that comes from your gut. It’s an attitude, and part of that attitude is to keep challenging yourself to tip the scales in a completely newfound direction each and every time you hit the studio or step out on stage, and for James, he does that effortlessly. With that fact in tow, no matter how “pop” his records become, James himself will always be a rock artist pushing the boundaries of what he does, and that much requires a great deal respect. “Celebrate”, in and of itself, is a very solid track.
If you pre-order ‘CELEBRATE’ on iTunes, due for release on April 8, 2014, you will obtain BOTH “Parachute” and “Celebrate” and nab the pre-order for a steal of a price: $7.99. If you pre-order the physical release via Walmart, however, you will obtain an album cover signed by James paired with an exclusive bonus DVD for just $10.00. Really, the choice is yours!
