There are many different techniques when it comes to massage therapy, and just the touch of another human can stimulate pleasurable feelings. Many types of massage are sensual, for pleasure, or even pain. In the case of pain or injury, they need to see a doctor, as massage therapy is not a medical remedy for injuries. To practice massage therapy for money you will need to earn your massage therapy license in most states, in which the class or classes will teach you the basics of human anatomy among other things. As for basic massages for your friends and loved ones, here is a technique you can practice for a soothing back massage. Remember, as long as it doesn’t hurt, there is no wrong way to give a massage.
First, have the individual lie in the prone position (face down) and place your hand on their back. Next, apply their favorite scented oil or lotion (make sure they are not allergic to it) on the back of your hand and let it warm up. After a few seconds, start rubbing the oil or lotion onto their skin, all over their back. Once the skin is easy to work with, place both hands next to each other on the bottom of their back. Run your hands up the back next to the spine and go all the way to the shoulders, using your body weight to move up the back. Next, go across the shoulders, making a letter T with the motion, and slide your hands back down the side of their back to the bottom, molding your hands to the contours of their body in the process. Once you get to the bottom, twist your hands back around and bring them back toward each other to continue the process. Keep doing this 6 or seven times to get the person relaxed. Next, stand at their side and rake your fingers back, starting at their ribs. Do this a few times and repeat on the other side. Under the rib cage use both of your hands to kneed the sides of the stomach, pushing down with one hand and pulling up with the other at the same time. To end the massage, use the figure T method again a few times and then run your fingers down their back, from their spine to the side, rhythmic motion. Always try to keep at least one hand on their back. Repeat this process more gently each time until you are finally done.
Massage is a wonderful way to show a person affection and can help people to relax. If you don’t have a massage table to work with, you can use a bed or even a table with some padding on it, such as thick blankets. Work from the side of them with one leg forward for good posture and use your body weight for pressure. Talk to the person receiving the massage to find out how much pressure they like.
