Joey’s Place is a small diner in Jackson Heights, New York, near Laguardia Airport. They have a small bar and an Italian menu in their local family style diner. They attract plenty of Laguardia travelers looking for a quick bite to eat.
But one thing they don’t tell their diners is they add a 15% service charge on all bills. That they don’t tell their diners this is a bit unethical, but, at least they put it clearly on the receipt, so they can certainly claim they aren’t trying to hide anything right? Wrong! Look at the clever attempt waitress Carolayn made to hide the service charge from some recent unsuspecting diners. She conveniently scribbled through the service charge, clearly hoping to double dip on her tip.
I was the diner. Even though the service wasn’t great, I laid down my standard 20% tip in cash, and then I noticed the added service charge. I then tipped nothing additional so this little trick actually cost Carolyn a couple bucks. But I suspect she makes it up through other diners. Shame on her.
So be careful out there diners, or you two might be tipping a server double what you intended.
