Reptiles are fascinating and some seem to be more fascinating then others. Snakes have always been a favorite of mine and what I find the most fascinating is that they seem to be almost identical to legless lizards. Many people don’t know about legless lizards, and at first glance they look identical. So how do you distinguish them from one another? Here are what’s different about them.
Legless lizards are fascinating because they evolved from lizards with legs at a certain point. One of the main things that makes a legless lizard distinctive from snakes are their eyelids. All lizards have eyelids and the legless lizard is no different. They also have outer ears, whereas, a snake doesn’t.
Being that their bodies are built differently, they have a more decreased range of motion and can’t get around the same way a snake does, or as easily. This is because they can only use their sides to get around, getting better assistance when they are able to push up on something. They are unable to move on flat surfaces, making them extremely vulnerable.
Their jaws aren’t flexible (detachable) either, causing them to have to eat foods that can better fit into their mouths. Another thing that makes them highly different is the ability to cut off their tail in the case of a threat. They can regrow it later on which takes somewhere up to a few months to a year. They can only do this one time, however.
Snakes are great creatures as well, evolving from four-legged snakes. Snakes are known for having no eyelids, and no outer ears. They have a great range of motion allowing them to move more smoothly and easily than legless lizards. They are also known for having flexible jaws and so can eat prey that is much larger than them and their mouths.
They can’t detach their tails like legless lizards can, but they can regurgitate their food in order to escape any threats if necessary. Overall, their bodies are longer than legless lizards, with their outer skin feeling slightly different as well.
Some snakes are highly poisonous as well with venom that gets into your bloodstream if you’re bitten. Legless lizards don’t have venom, however, even though there is plenty of harmful bacteria in their mouths that can be dangerous if your bite isn’t seen to. (This is mostly seen with a wild komodo dragon, however.)
