COMMENTARY | It looks like that the smoking gun email has been uncovered that demonstrates that there was an Obama administration coverup of the true cause of the Benghazi Massacre with the goal of protecting the president’s reelection prospects.
According to USA Today:
“The e-mails, obtained by conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch through a Freedom of Information Act request, include one in which White House official Ben Rhodes lists “goals” for then-U.N. ambassador Susan Rice to meet in explaining the attack and protests occurring across the Middle East that week to the American public.
“Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans died in the assault, which the White House subsequently acknowledged was an al-Qaeda-linked terror attack.
“The e-mail, sent to various officials including White House spokesman Jay Carney, said one goal was ‘to underscore that these protests are rooted in an Internet video, and not a broader failure of policy.’
“Another goal was ‘to reinforce the president and administration’s strength and steadiness in dealing with difficult challenges.’
“Rhodes is assistant to the president and deputy national security adviser for strategic communication and speechwriting.”
The problem is that the administration knew all along that the massacre was the result of a terrorist action and not the video, Hitherto the White House has been blaming the intelligence community for the video story. The email is direct proof that the story came from within the White House. The question is, did Rhodes come up with the strategy himself or, as is considered likely, was he ordered to by someone higher on the food chain.
Versions of the email had been given to congressional investigators, but were heavily redacted. Thanks to Judicial Watch we now know why. The Benghazi Massacre occurred in the midst of the 2012 election campaign when the president was claiming that, with the execution of Osama bin Laden, he had Al Qaeda on the run. Clearly the news that Al Qaeda had mounted an assault on an American diplomatic compound and killed four Americans, including an ambassador, did not fit that narrative. So the bogus story of the video was concocted, blowing enough smoke to prevent Benghazi from sinking the Obama reelection.
Roger Simon suggests that this revelation, which will also damage Hillary Clinton, is an impeachable offense. That is not likely, mainly for sordid political reasons. But it does mean that the rest of the Obama presidency has been blighted and pretty much crippled.
