I assumed that when I entered my twenties my skin issues would magically disappear along with my teens. Here I am now, in my thirties still dealing with the occasional yet infuriating crop of blemishes. Lucky for you, I have tried everything, bought everything, and put most of the contents of my refrigerator on my face at one point or another and I know what works and what is better off left in your salad. Here is what I learned:
Consider Your Pillowcase While You Are Sleeping, Beauty
You spend a full eight hours with your face happily pressed against your pillowcase, so be careful about how and when you launder your linens. Most laundry detergent is full of dyes and fragrances that can wreak havoc on sensitive skin. I switched to a clear detergent with no dyes and no fragrances when washing my pillowcases. The other thing to consider is how often you are washing your pillowcases. I either swap out or wash my pillowcases at least twice a week. I know it seems like such a pain (and it is), but I started seeing noticeable results when I made the commitment to doing this. If you can afford the investment, buy several pairs of pillowcases and just switch them out then wash all of them on the weekend. Once you get in the habit, it’s not that difficult.
Gone Are the Days of Harsh Chemicals
I do not even bother going down the skincare aisle in the drugstore anymore. There are so many ingredients in cleansing products that I can’t even pronounce, I don’t want them anywhere my precious facial skin. I opt for the oil cleansing method using a specific combination of oils to clean my face. It sounds weird, but you can refer to my article about my experiences. For moisturizer I use coconut oil on my cheeks, nose, and forehead. I skip my chin and around my mouth, because that is where I am the most acne-prone.
Consider Your Towels and Washcloths
I use a washcloth to wash my face and just like my pillowcases, they are washed in hot water with clear detergent and a bit of bleach to sanitize. I am a little crazy about this and sometimes even travel with my own washcloth or towel to avoid a breakout later.
Do Not Give Gravity Any Extra Help
Some of us are special enough to be battling wrinkles and blemishes all at the same time. Lucky us! So no matter what products you are using on your skin be sure to apply them in an upward motion. Whether you’re applying moisturizer, cleanser, or just running a damp washcloth over your face, never swipe in a downward direction. Push your skin where you want it to be. Gravity is a cruel enough mistress; we do not need to give her any assistance.
