With a family of four, whenever we plan for a trip, there are several criteria I look into before deciding where to go. Here are some of the common overlooked cities which you can consider next time you are planning a trip.
Indianapolis, Indiana – Indianapolis is the capital of Indiana and by far one of the best cities I have been to. It is kid-friendly, no rush kind of city with lots of things to do as a family or with friends. From a critically acclaimed Children’s Museum to Lucas Oil Stadium where NFL 2012 was hosted, Indianapolis has everything you need for a family vacation. It is also close to Carmel city which is known for its Arts district. I have found Indianapolis very pleasant and people friendly. Only thing to take care before the travel is the weather, especially if you are from out of town. Indiana is known for some crazy weather and we just had a brutal winter. So check the weather before you make decisions.
Solvang, CA – Solvang which is Danish for ‘Sunny field’ is a beautiful city located in California. It is a small little city founded by Danish teachers in 1911. It has blossomed to include several Danish restaurants, shops and local activities to involve tourists in Danish culture. I like this place so much as it takes me back in time where the technology was minimum and people lived a peaceful and healthy life. Think about visiting Solvang as taking a picnic. Pack a picnic bag and you can dine on green luscious lawns along the beautiful and quiet tree lined streets. I like to check out the Danish windmill and also taste the famous Danish pastries.
Boulder, CO – This is a quaint university town which is one of the most livable cities in US. Boulder is coming to be known as ‘foodie’ town with many award winning restaurants. You can enjoy hiking and biking activities or simply stroll down the historic Pearl Street Mall. Bikers will surely enjoy the Valmont Bike Park here. The University of Colorado is located in Boulder as well. If you are planning to check out the university or the local scenery, there is something for everybody here.
Washington DC – I think this is an overlooked city mainly because Washington DC has tons of stuff for families that are kid friendly but also are free. The Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History and the NASA museum are sure to get the kids excited. The National Museum of Natural History is also a sure spot to visit as children can get to see many familiar items such as Harry Potter’s robe and many more. The accommodations are also kid-friendly so as a family you can enjoy more. Visiting Washington DC every time, we tend to discover more and more new things as a family.
Orlando, FL – Orlando is a popular tourist destination but not as popular as Miami. But as a family with young kids, we loved visiting Orlando and I don’t think we would have enjoyed as much visiting Miami. Orlando is the capital city of Florida and there are numerous amusement parks for kids and all alike. We had planned a small trip to Orlando when our youngest was one year old. It was for 5 days and we felt 5 days was not enough for us or the kids to enjoy everything. We stayed close to the amusement parks to avoid more transportation time.
Chicago – Known as windy city, Chicago has lots to offer in terms of sightseeing. There are several spots for children as well as delicious restaurants for grown-ups to hit. Places like the Lego store, Navy Pier and Adler Planetarium ought to be on your to do list. Make sure you plan your trip so that you do not end up tiring your children end of day.
