Airports, airplanes, and most restaurants along your travel route don’t give you many healthy food options and it can be easy to derail your diet with just a few meals. Packing healthy snacks or mini-meals for your next flight can help you navigate through those travel days without diet sabotage. Plan ahead so you have plenty of energy while traveling and aren’t tempted to indulge in processed foods, sugar-laden treats, and other diet saboteurs en route.
Here are six healthy foods to pack for your next flight:
#1: Apples with Nut Butter
This is one of my favorite snacks when traveling because it’s very filling and provides plenty of energy during a long-haul flight. Throw some small apples into your carry-on bag, along with a few travel-friendly packets of Justin’s nut butter. It’s the perfect combination of healthy carbs, protein, and healthy fats.
#2: Low-Sugar Snack Bars
Even though you’ll find dozens of different types of granola bars and snack bars at the airport and other venues along the way, most are loaded with sugar and are heavily processed. One of my favorite snack bars when traveling are KIND bars. The Nuts & Spices variety have just five grams of sugar and are made with non-GMO ingredients.
#3: Hummus and Pita Chips
If you’re cravings something salty but want to keep yourself on a healthy track, pack a few small containers of hummus and a bag of pita chips. Sabra makes travel-friendly hummus cups with pretzel crisps loaded right in the lid. You can pick these up at some airport concessions stands or just bring your own and eat hummus with pita chips for a healthier snack.
#4: Almonds and Dark Chocolate
Another one of my favorite snacks for the road, almonds with some dark chocolate chips or a few squares of dark chocolate is the perfect pick-me-up on that flight that’s taking its toll on your mood. Almonds can reduce stress and anxiety, and are also a good source of protein an healthy fats. Combine them with dark chocolate that’s loaded with antioxidants and has endorphin-releasing properties and you’ll be all set for a blissful flight.
#5: Rice Cakes with Peanut Butter
Keep things healthy by sticking to low-salt or salt-free rice cakes made with brown rice and eat these with peanut butter for a healthy and nutritious snack any time of day. This is one of my favorite snacks for late-night flights because it’s filling but still fairly light.
#6: Banana with Nut Butter
When you’re heading off on a long-haul flight and don’t know when your next meal will be, eat a banana with some nut butter for steady energy. This is a great snack when you’re not planning to be moving much – walking through the terminal doesn’t really count – and can keep you full for a couple of hours. Make a sandwich out of these ingredients if you need a mini-meal for the road.
