As summer approaches, you might find yourself reaching for a nice, big ice cream cone or a sugary sweet drink. Drop it! Just because it’s warm doesn’t give you a free pass to indulge on all those sweet, cold treats. Here are a few ways to swap out unhealthy desserts and drinks for less indulgent options.
1. Swap a Frappuccino for an iced coffee
Your favorite frozen coffee shop beverage is blended with loads of sugar and calories. Swap it for an iced coffee instead. Even if you add a pump of syrup and a splash of cream, you won’t come close to the calories in a Frappuccino.
2. Swap a bowl of ice cream for an ice cream cup
Now, I never said you couldn’t have ice cream at all! You just have to go about it in a healthier way. Do not buy gallons of ice cream; this gives you free reign to clean out the tub. Instead, buy pre-portioned ice cream cups (Ben and Jerry’s and Starbucks make half-cup portions for $1-$2 each). That way, you can enjoy a perfectly-sized portion of ice cream and not overdo it with a spoon and a gallon.
3. Swap your icy soda for a sweet tea
The key here is to make the sweet tea yourself — don’t order it from a restaurant or buy a bottled version. Black tea with a little raw sugar or even raw honey will help your sweet tooth without all the sugar and preservatives of a soda (even diet soda can be bad for you).
4. Swap a drumstick for a fudgesicle
We all get a little nostalgic when the ice cream truck rolls by during summer months. You don’t have to resist the urge to buy yourself a treat, but you do have to be smarter about what you get. Drumsticks are notoriously bad for you — all that chocolate and caramel and ice cream and nuts is a bit of an overload. Go for a plain fudgesicle so you don’t ingest a meals’ worth of calories in one sitting!
5.Swap a margarita for a skinny-rita
Nothing quite says summer like a nice big margarita. Whether frozen or on the rocks, you’re looking at a liquid calorie bomb either way. Make yourself (or order at a bar) a skinnier version of this adult drink. Try tequila, soda and lime juice on the rocks. If you need a little sweetness, ask for a sugared rim.
6. Swap s’mores for grilled fruit
If you’re at a BBQ, chances are s’mores will be served. In fact, they’re my favorite summer treat. However, you can’t have one every weekend! Instead, grill up some solid fruit like peaches, mango and pineapple. Top with honey or one spoonful of ice cream to cool it down and sweeten it up.
You don’t have to miss out on the fun of summer treats just because you’re trying to be healthy. Use these swaps to stay in shape and enjoy summer fun with your family.
