I was a bridesmaid in my brother’s wedding. Being a bridesmaid is an awesome opportunity to show the bride just how much her friendship means to you. Below are a list of bridesmaid’s responsibilities and what you can expect to experience before the wedding.
Shopping for Bridal Gowns
Before the wedding, shopping will be one of your major contributions! The bride might ask your help in bridal gown shopping, especially if you are the maid of honor. She will want your advice, your opinions, and your insight. Your job is to stay positive, keep the bride focused, and help the bride feel lovely and special in whatever gown she picks out. Have fun with this task and enjoy every minute of it-literally every minute as the bride pulls you into bridal shop after bridal shop, weekend after tormented weekend.
Shopping for Bridesmaids’ dresses
If you are lucky, you will also get to help pick out the dress you will wear (a much more personal decision as you are the one that has to wear the dress in public). This shopping trip you can express a few more of your emotions, especially negative ones regarding the color of the dress or the amount of leg or cleavage shown. You still want to help your friend in the decision making process, but you want it to be a wise decision enjoyed by all.
Registering for Gifts
The bride may ask for your help in registering, which requires an afternoon of pretend shopping, picking out all of the cool things the bride doesn’t have but wants people to buy her. The groom may be present as well as representatives from the respective stores. Embrace this activity. It is the cheapest shopping binge you will ever experience!
Planning the Bridal Shower
As a bridesmaid, one of your responsibilities could include planning the bridal shower. This may be in conjunction with the maid of honor and the bride or groom’s mother. Planning a bridal shower is a fun way to show your love and support for your friend, so have fun and be available to help out. Send out invitations? Check! Pick up the cake? Check! Act as a tour guide for the hot cousin who flew in from Atlanta? Check!
Planning the Bachelorette Party
Another party you might organize is the Bachelorette Party. This is the wilder, R rated version of the bridal shower with more booze and more hot men. This might be a joint endeavor between all bridesmaids or the responsibility might fall on the maid of honor. Pick wisely because you don’t want to party so hard you end losing the bride the way Bradley Cooper lost the groom in “The Hangover.”
The Dress Rehearsal
You are required to attend the dress rehearsal and dress rehearsal dinner, so make sure you are available on that date. This is a chance to run through a practice wedding ceremony, working out the logistics of fitting together so many pieces in the grand scheme of a wedding. Make sure you understand where you are supposed to be at all times and what specific roles you have during the ceremony, if any (who is holding the bride’s bouquet? Who is in charge of her train?) Don’t be afraid to ask questions. The worse thing that could happen is you don’t know your responsibility in the middle of the ceremony. If you cause a disturbance or interruption, your bride will never forgive you.
Being a bridesmaid is an honor and your job is to help the bride have the best wedding experience possible. Take this time to celebrate your friendship and above all else, enjoy every minute making lasting memories with one of your best friends!
