A question asked on one of the GRE practice test, had me pondering should curriculum be the same for all students. I though about this question with regards to different types of schools as opposed to students with special needs or gifted students. I believe this is a very fair academic approach to learning. All schools should have the highest expectations of their students by giving them the opportunity to achieve the expectations. Some schools offer way more advantages to students of higher income families, than those who are in low income families. If the curriculum were the same for everyone then I believe the standard would be of a higher rather than lower academic curriculum. Low income families would love for their kids to be able to get a great education that they can use in the future beyond high school. Due to certain circumstances some people aren’t able to provide their kids with a good education because of the schools in the area their children live in.
Education gives more advantages to people, and I believe everyone deserves that advantage. There are not a lot of good schools and even teachers. Some kids are barely making it out of school. It may be due to teachers, books, and curriculum. If it were the same, then parents could be proud to send their kids to school knowing they are getting the same education as those in private schools. A disadvantage would be maybe some private or charter schools may lose business because the free public schools have the same curriculum. Then again, I don’t see it as such a big disadvantage because I know there will still be parents sending their kids to private school just to be around children of similar status.
Another possible disadvantage would be the curriculum being harder or easier as a whole. If it were harder, but the teachers were not good teachers that helped the students understand the course work, some kids who don’t get as much educational support may be at a disadvantage. However, with excellent teachers, this idea is an advantage. If the curriculum got easier, then some students may not be getting challenged enough. However, they could be in accelerated or gifted classes to solve that problem. To summarize I think that everyone should have equal educational opportunity, and great teachers to help students reach their goals.
