Who doesn’t love a good road trip? They become the map of our summers and make memories that last a lifetime.
I am a mother of three with one on the way, and money has often become a factor in our road trips. But living in one of the most awesome states for day trips, California, a memorable day trip can be had at any budget. There was time a few years ago when we were a family of four (which only seems like yesterday but was more than three years ago) that our girls wanted to go to the beach. Living in the Central Valley, the beach isn’t that far but far enough to need planning to fit into the budget. My husband I dug deep into our childhood memories and decided that we would make the 2-hour drive to Santa Cruz, as we both had spent many of fun days there in our youth.
That was a fun day. After all the needed packing up of the car, bathing suits, beach toys, towels, blankets, DVD players for the car, cooler, picnic, etc. we were on our way. As children often do they changed their minds and didn’t want to watch their movies they wanted music. Luckily for us my husband brought his iPod (yes, we were still using an iPod). We looked through the albums and dad had uploaded some of the girl’s favorites like Taylor Swift, (pre-twerking) Miley Cyrus, you know those songs that once the first note hits you know the song and belt out every word. Well sing we did, every song they wanted to hear as loud as we could for as long as we could and before we knew it we were there. Time just flew by and beach time here we come which only prolonged our family enjoyment.
We were a family, without the distractions of everyday. While we made the short road trip to the coast we found each other again, laughed with each other, and were actually present in the moment. Even now that a few years have pasted our girls still remember that day when they were 4 & 7 years and are asking when we can do it again, only now they need new music to sing too. Our road trips may not be long but they have become the mile markers of our young family’s life.
