Brighter and warmer days are approaching and hiding the extra winter pounds behind your sweater will no longer be possible without looking ridiculous. Looking to shed winter pounds? Want to start a spring awakening of your body? Then control your portions, get moving, and exercise intensely.
Getting your portions in check
When I started Weight Watchers, I was amazed as to how much I had been eating. Peanut butter, cereal, and bowls of ice cream were part of my consumption. Weight Watchers taught me to stop the madness of insane portions!
So eat healthy and non-processed foods and limit those portions! A handful of almonds does not equal 50 nuts!
Add movement to your daily routine
Our bodies are made to move. In the book Eat Move Sleep by Tom Rath, numerous studies suggest the importance of daily movement for our health. This involves simple things like standing, walking, and just being mobile.
I became so inspired by the idea of daily movement that I would stand and march in place when I would watch TV! This may sound a bit obsessive, but I figured that sleep is when my body would relax and restore itself not while slothfully laying on the sofa.
Our work can have a stifling affect on our movement too. A desk job may be a bigger killer than consuming a poor diet. That is why I am an advocate for company wellness programs that encourage movement at work. Treadmill desks are fantastic but if your place of work doesn’t have such a progressive program, you will have to take matters into your own hands by getting up from your desk and moving around.
I measure my daily activity using a FitBit One tracker and I have now increased my daily step count to above 20,000 steps per day! Marching in place, cleaning the house, walking in a store, or taking the dog out in the sunshine all have the added benefit of keeping me active all day long.
I exercise 7 times per week mixing in DVD workouts like Focus T25 and Insanity, treadmill work, and lifting dumbbells. Whichever activity I choose, I do it with intent and intensity to torch calories and ignite my metabolism.
Face spring and summer with these healthy habits. Whether you are looking to shed a lot of weight or a couple of pounds, these tips helped me drop 10 pounds since winter began. They can help you achieve your goals too.
