Working women are no rarity in India. There has been a rise in number of working women in the past few decades, particularly in metro cities. Still workplaces haven’t largely improved to incorporate them. Though they constitute 40% of total workforce, they face many issues that are hardly addressed. This article throws light on some of the major challenges faced by Indian women especially in large corporations:
- Basic Facilities and Hygiene: Most offices lack basic sanitation and hygiene facilities for women. This issue if neither brought up so frequently nor resolved by the HR proactively.
- Insensitivity: There is a lack of sensitivity of male employees towards their female counterparts. Matters such as pregnancy and childbirth often becomes a laughingstock in offices.
- Sexual Harassment: Big corporate firms have recently started taking actions towards the cases of sexual harassment of female employees by their colleagues or bosses. This is largely due to intervention of government and NGO’s. There have been thousands of cases of sexual harassment that aren’t even reported. Sexist remarks are common in workplaces. It’s a high time that employers increase their concerns over security issues for women. There is also a need to increase awareness towards these issues.
- Childcare & Flexibility: “Where do I keep my baby?” This is the biggest question that all new working moms face. Though most companies provide maternity leaves of 2- 6 months, work becomes an obstruction to childcare. Many western countries allow flexible workplace timings. But this trend hasn’t yet reached India.
If the employers put an effort in solving these issues, they will surely see an upsurge in the number of female workforce. Therefore proper resolution of such issues is important for women empowerment in India.
