You entered the building and found your bare table amongst a sea of ones that are either decorated, in the midst of, or ones that are as bare as yours. Or perhaps, you are only in the dream phase of how to set up your table at an upcoming book event. Either way, you’re at the crossroad of either knowing or not knowing how to decorate your book event table.
Each table has several main components, each one with a different level of importance to catch the eye of every single person attending the book fair or festival.
Whether you use a store bought plastic, a material one from a dining room table or something unique, the best place to start is the table cloth. Perhaps your novel is a Western, a horse saddle blanket would be a nice twist, and for a Regency Romance, a lace cloth. Remember color matters too. Try to match the colors of your book cover(s). While white is nice, color pops, so be creative and have fun.
Don’t underestimate the power of well placed books. Whether you use an office desk organizer to raise them in the air or a picture frame holder, try to get them off the table and standing for people to see instead of just lying flat. Of course, you can have ones lying next to the standing one, but when a person can see the cover as they approach the table, it will perk their interest more than just seeing the bottom of the book pages.
A large sign either on a stand behind you or on the front of your table is good, another sign about double the size of a piece of paper sitting on the table next to you is great too, and both, even better. One for your name would look nice, too.
Bowles of candy, plates of promotional giveaways, knick knacks that are centerpieces in your story or give people visuals of what they can expect from your novel, if you’ve dream it in your imagination, there are only three words-GO FOR IT. Make your table your own just like you made your story your own, smile, and have fun. Who doesn’t love a book event?
