The NYC arts scene expands once again, thanks to Seniors Partnering with Artists Citywide (SPARC) Artist-in-Residence Marianne van Lent. She will present Seniors Art Gallery at the Greenwich House, Center on the Square Senior Center. Find below a clip from the Press Release:
“Seniors Partnering with Artists Citywide (SPARC)is a community arts engagement program that places artists‐in‐residence at senior centers across the five boroughs of New York City. Through the program, 51 artists will provide creative programming for seniors at 50 centers in 2014, presenting free public events and displaying a diverse array of projects this spring and summer. SPARCis a collaboration among the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the Department for the Aging and five of the City’s local arts councils. The program was developed in 2009 as part of the Mayor’s Age‐Friendly NYC initiative, and is supported, in part, by funding from the Department for the Aging.”
I went to nyc.gov/culture to find more information on the SPARC program. I learned that when artists participate in this program, they receive a stipend and access to senior center workspace in exchange for their work with the seniors arts program. Currently, there are approximately 51 artists participating with the 50 senior centers.
