Our children are our future. A good future starts off with a good education. So what will you do? Homeschool them, send them to a private school, or just keep switching them from school to school until you find the right one? How about choose one and choose the right one. Send them to a KIPP school. I have gone to a KIPP school and still use the knowledge they gave to me and apply it today. This is a review of KIPP: Gaston College Preparatory. I will show you what makes this a good school for your children in every way.
First of all, what is KIPP? KIPP is an acronym for the Knowledge Is Power Program. They have KIPP schools all over the nation. Their objective is to have every child in the college of their choice who attends their school. The particular school that I attended was called KIPP: Gaston College Preparatory. All KIPP schools have the same goal, but this one was one of a kind. KIPP: Gaston College Preparatory is a public charter school. Anyone who is willing to learn can attend. When I was a student, they only had 5-8. Then they eventually added grades to make a 5-12. Two years after I graduated they had a complete k-12. When I have children, and if I do, they will attend KIPP so I know they will be given the best education.
Now you are probably wondering what makes this school different. I will tell you. Other schools focus on appearance rather than education, KIPP: Gaston College Preparatory or GCP is the exact opposite. The founders of this school, Caleb Dolan and Tammy Sutton, built this school on an old peanut field. Their focus was to actually “teach” their students. Teach them things that will follow them for the rest of their lives. I remember starting Pre-Algebra in the 7th grade. At other schools, they didn’t start this until the 9th or 10th grade. On the first day, we had homework. In every class! Thankfully, they gave us an hour study hall to complete our homework. My cousin is in 1st grade and he tells me that he knows how to write complete paragraphs. When I was in the 1st grade, we were reading The Cat in the Hat and I could barely spell. KIPP is probably the reason why we say “kids are getting smarter everyday”.
This is not the best part. When I attended GCP, we received “paychecks”. These were to show us our progress and what we need to improve through-out the week. I appreciated that because now that I think of it, they were showing us how much we would have earned from that week based on performance. Just like a real job. I see that has reflected in my good work ethic. They also rewarded us with trips, through the year and one at the end. This was based on how well we did on our paychecks. So we strived to do well, but they told us that we should do the right thing just to be rewarded. I now see why. In the real world you will not always be rewarded on the good that you have done. I have learned a lot from GCP. I’m pretty sure if you sent your kids there, they would as well. Maybe even teach you something. Overall KIPP: Gaston College Preparatory is a great deal. If your children attended this school, you will see a big difference in their education.
