Running headlamps are an absolute necessity when running in the dark. Not only do they make it so that drivers, cyclists, and others can see you when you’re out on the streets and sidewalks, but they also allow you to see the trail in front of you.
But a headlight is no good if you’re not going to wear it, and the only way that you’ll wear a lamp is if it is light, small, and bright.
Not many headlights fit those requirements. However, there is one runner’s headlamp that not only has those exact characteristics, but also has many more options that make it a great option for runners.
The Petzl E+Lite
Petzl makes some great lights and headlamps, but one of the best ones is the Petzl E+Lite .
First of all, this is a very light lamp and comes in at just under 29 grams, which is one of the lightest headlights on the market. Most headlamps weight between 60 and 80 grams, and at just half the weight of these, this headlamp won’t give you any second thoughts. After running for 10 minutes, you won’t even realize you’re wearing it.
In addition to being lightweight, the Petzl E+Lite is extremely small. It only takes up minimal space on your forehead and can fit very nicely if you decide to wear a cold weather beanie or hat on your runs. In fact, this light has a diameter of just bigger than a quarter, which is nothing compared to most of the other lamps marketed for runners.
Finally, this headlamp is somewhat bright. However, it is not the brightest lamp on the market. It only comes in at about 16 lumens. This isn’t very bright when compared to other headlamp models, as some rate over 100 lumens. With running lamps, though, it is all about maximizing weight and size with brightness, and while larger and more heavier models are brighter, they are not suitable for running.
The Petzl E+Lite also has some great advantages besides it’s size and weight:
- There is a small whistle attached to the headband.
- The light sits on a 360 degree swivel so you can change the angle to whatever you need.
- There are two different lighting modes: an economic and bright mode along with your choice of a white light and a red light. These can also be set to flashing.
- It can be used at temperatures up to 30 degrees below zero.
- It is also waterproof and can be used in the rain with no problem.
