People always laugh when I tell them that I’m good at the claw machine. Most people seem to think the machines are nothing more than scams that eat your quarters. These people always write my comment off as a joke until they see me play the machine.
This past week on a evening out with my best friend, I won six plush toys in just five turns. Five of these I gave to my fiance and one to her sister. Two of the toys were picked up at the same time, like a two for one special. There is a method to success in the claw machine. It’s a game, not just a money eating device.
You’ve got to know which toys you can get before attempting to play. If you have your heart set on one particular doll, you’ll probably spend a lot of money to get it. You’ve got to find toys in the proper positions. If the doll is more than half way covered by other dolls, you would be best off trying for another one. The easiest toys to win are facing belly or back up. This gives the claw more shape to grasp.
Most claws spin just a bit while lowering. You have to expect this in order to be successful. Aiming for the middle of the toy’s body will help the claw to grasp the toy no matter the direction the claw spins.
Almost every claw machine features a mirror on the back end. Use that mirror to your advantage. Never assume you have the perfect position without checking the opposing view from the mirror. Often times you’ll be off just a bit. When positioning is everything, you can never be too careful.
Don’t let the timer freak you out. Claw machines typically feature a ten to twenty second timer per game. The timer often makes people feel rushed and forces them to make snap decisions. Taking your time and working with the time instead of against it will give you a more enjoyable experience and a better chance at winning.
Examine how the claw closes. Some claws close just enough for the tips of each arm to meet. Other claws will close to the point that the arms overlap. This could be an advantage to you. Claws that overlap have more of a grip than others. Claws that simply close just enough often drop items more. The claws that drop items more often can be defeated by simply aiming a little to the side of your toy, where the claw looks as thought it might only grasp it a bit. Often times, these claws incidentally pull the toy in when it drops next to them and works to your advantage.
Next time you see a claw machine, don’t shy away from it. Win a toy or two for your loved ones. The machine is nowhere near as difficult as others will have you believe. Use these simple tips and take home something new. There is no greater feeling than winning a toy for a quarter.
