At the age of 40, after giving birth to six girls, I suddenly found myself experiencing repeated miscarriages. Five to be exact, one directly after the other. How depressing. How could this be the case after giving birth to six girls over the last decade? The impact mentally was immense, even after birthing all of the girls.
After my third miscarriage, I sought help from my OB/GYN doctor I had for years. The diagnosis? Secondary infertility due to advanced maternal age. I could not carry to term, a symptom of this condition, my doctor explained. It’s not just inability to achieve pregnancy as I’d thought. I had the girls, feeling the dismal effects of so many miscarriages in a row nonetheless. Those circumstances seemed to make my particular situation more unique because no one justified my depression.
The diagnosis was difficult to take. I felt as though all sorts of testing should be done, however, my OB/GYN doctor felt very confident after a few non-evasive tests like an internal pelvic exam, pap smear, blood work, and ultrasound, that secondary infertility due to advanced maternal age was an appropriate diagnosis for me. He also took into account the fact that 2 ultrasounds from my 2nd and 3rd early pregnancies in this barrage of miscarriages, showed some abnormalities in the small fetuses. This was a good indication that there was likely some decline in my egg quality.
My doctor explained some of the medical options I could consider regarding fertility specialists, however having my alternative health background, I quickly referred myself back to my alternative health roots which I’d gotten away from. I felt that if my egg quality was compromised from advanced maternal age, I could improve that with nutrition rather than super ovulation drugs. Next, I began to improve upon my nutrition. The most significant way I did this was by eating and juicing raw veggies, fruit, nuts and seeds. My diet became solely plant based. Combined with that was a rigorous supplement schedule of B vitamins, arginine and enzymes. The enzymes improved my digestive capability so I would absorb the nutrition from the good food I was eating, therefore improving my egg quality. I also did aerobics daily.
My Learning Experience
After a year of following the above regimen, my seventh child was conceived then born. Next my eighth, both boys. It was good to know taking control of my infertility by improving diet and lifestyle would achieve the desired result…babies.
