Sean Kanan reassured fans a few months ago that he was not leaving General Hospital even though his character, A.J., had been more in the background on GH. This made sense since when Kanan agreed to return to GH, he had said publicly that he would only return if it was for a long term deal (paraphrased). It has now been announced that Kanan is officially leaving GH to return to the Bold and the Beautiful. His last scenes on GH will air approximately in mid-April. But why the sudden decision to leave?
It turns out that it’s not actually so sudden. Kanan has been rather unhappy with the storylines that A.J. Quartermaine had been given since his return. The character couldn’t maintain a relationship with Elizabeth before that fell apart and the whole Pickle Lila vs. Pickle Eddie storyline was considered an epic fail by many GH fans as well. Not to mention all the panic attacks (that were more like heart attacks than actual panic attacks) that the character had never suffered from before this last return to Port Charles. Let’s not forget that A.J. had started drinking again too, which made Kanan have to act drunk in most scenes. The writers could have done so much more with A.J. as opposed to again having him fall off the wagon, so to speak.
It is unknown at this time if the character of A.J. Quartermaine will be recast, but it is doubtful that even if he is recast that it will be any time soon since it was phrased that Kanan is being written off the show.
Kanan will be returning to the Bold and the Beautiful as Deacon Sharpe. His scenes are scheduled to air on June 13th.
