Scoliosis, according to the National Institutes of Health, is an abnormal curvature of the spine. This curve can take on an “S” or “C” shape and is more prevalent in females. The condition has multiple causes and varying degrees of severity and is routinely screened for in middle school.
What Doctors Look For
When doctors examine for scoliosis, they will look to see if one shoulder is higher than the other or if the pelvis is tilted. They will ask the patient to bend forward in order to see the curvature of the spine more easily. They may use an X-ray or MRI.
The Effect On Self Esteem
Some treatments for Scoliosis require the wearing of a back brace. The brace can lead to image concerns for the patient, especially in their teenage years. It may be helpful for those suffering with esteem issues to look at the many famous and successful people who have already had to deal with scoliosis, and seek inspiration. I’ve included a short list below.
The Cost of Surgery
Another of the treatments for scoliosis is surgery. The Spine Correction Center of the Rockies states that the average price of Harrington Rod Implantation Surgery is $120,000. But…
According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the cost of corrective surgery varies from region to region and country to country. The specific circumstances and requirements of each patient and their doctors, as well as insurance co-pays, complicate pricing. They do admit however that it is an expensive operation.
King Richard III of England’s remains were discovered under a parking lot in September of 2012, after having been lost for 527 years. One of the identifying characteristics of his skeleton was the scoliosis he was known to have, accompanied by a cleaved skull.

A diagnosis of scoliosis can raise many questions and fears. However, there are several treatment options available and indeed, many people do not require invasive treatment at all. As the many famous people I have listed demonstrate, it is possible for a person to go on and pursue their ambitions unhindered by scoliosis.
