Bulletin board displays based on a particular subject give your students a deeper look at the topic. Science is one option for a bulletin board theme. You can cover any scientific topic on a bulletin board. Here are some science ideas to get you started.
Make the bulletin board that also serves as a reference for your science class. Highlight the steps of the scientific method on the board. Add a picture that represents each step. For example, you might make a giant question mark to represent the first step which is ask a question. When the kids conduct an experiment, they can refer to the bulletin board to help them through the steps.
Another way to use the bulletin board is to highlight different tools scientists use. This might include microscopes, telescopes, magnifying glasses, petri dishes, Bunsen burners and beakers. Include an image of each tool. Add a description of what each tool is used for. This is a good option for kids who are just starting to use the tools in science class.
For a different approach, focus on famous scientists. Include a picture, the name and the contributions to the science field of each person you highlight. This gives the kids some background on how we know different science ideas.
You can also turn the focus on the kids and how they are scientists, too. Take a picture of each child. If you have one, have the kids wear a lab coat and goggles to help them look the part. Have each child finish the sentence, “I am a scientist because…” This helps the kids realize they too can use science just like famous scientists.
Specific Science Topics
Instead of taking a general science approach, narrow it down to a specific scientific topic the kids are currently studying. Include information about the topic or a diagram that relates to it. For example, you might make a giant food chain on the bulletin board or a diagram that shows the life cycle of a butterfly, phases of the moon or growth of a plant. Include lots of pictures to support the information about the science topic you choose. While this idea relates directly to the current unit of study, it does require you to change the display frequently to keep up with each new unit.
How We Use Science
Let the kids help decorate the science bulletin board with this idea. Each child comes up with a way she uses or sees science in real life. This might be cooking, growing a garden or watching snow melt. This bulletin board idea helps kids think beyond the science book to recognize that science is all around them.
