Some come belched from fiery bowels churning below;
Others silently settle eons on the ocean’s kettle.
Crushing heated pressure on sheets of sediment makes marble from limestone and slate from shale.
Pressure during mountain building makes amphibolite from basalt.
Some rocks hold iron: from the core, or from heaven.
Rocks may contain gems, or be radioactive, or
Contain fossils of coral, trilobites, crinoids, or huge extinct land animals.
“Can there be time without change?”
“Is space something distinct from the objects in the universe?”
Metaphysics, viewed through relativistic eyes, is reduced to relationships between things in the universe.
Rocks are so cold, so hard, so old.
If only they could talk…
Each would have something to say about space and time…
I’d pick up the ones
I could hold in my hands
And listen to the story of the universe.
