With “X-Men: Days of Future Past” a success for Fox, the company is looking ahead to the future of the X-Men franchise and what will come next. The next movie will hit in 2016 with “X-Men: Apocalypse,” followed by a third “Wolverine” movie. However, what will come after that? According to a tweet by comic book creator Rob Liefeld, the popular character of “Cable” won’t be appearing in “X-Men: Apocalypse,” which is shocking since he and Apocalypse are intertwined in X-Men history.
With that in mind, here is a look at Apocalypse and Cable and how this connects to the overall X-Men universe.
The movie “X-Men: Apocalypse” will likely send the X-Men into battle with one of their most dangerous adversaries, Apocalypse. For people who watched “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” Apocalypse is the character shown in the post credit scene by the pyramids. In the Marvel Universe, Apocalypse is considered one of the very first mutants to ever exist. He is very old and wants to rule the world, making it a place where only the strongest survive. As a result, he has become one of the most dangerous enemies of The X-Men.
Cable was born to Scott Summers (Cyclops) and Madelyne Pryor, who was a clone of Jean Grey that Scott felt in love with after he thought Jean was dead. However, after Cable’s birth, Apocalypse infected him with what is known as the techno-virus, something that kills anyone with the mutant gene. In order to save his life, Scott and Marilyn agreed to send him to the far future where an antidote exists. In that future, Apocalypse tries to capture him to kill the prophesy of Cable bringing an end to Apocalypse’s reign of terror. To protect Cable, a clone was made of him known as Stryfe, who was captured by Apocalypse, raised to be evil, and became Cable’s greatest adversary.
When Stryfe headed into the past, Cable follows to continue their fight. That is how Cable ends up in the present era. He heads to America to meet Professor X and soon becomes the leader of the New Mutants, which later becomes known as X-Force. As Liefeld has said in the past, X-Force has been in development to become a movie. The big problem here is that the reason The New Mutants become X-Force is because of Cable, and leaving him out of the “X-Men: Apocalypse” storyline could make his appearance tricky. However, as anyone who saw “X-Men: Days of Future Past” can tell you, Fox is good at keeping secrets.
