With Spring finally, it’s time to start thinking about Summer trends in fashion and how to start building your wardrobe to include new pieces. This year, retro looks and fits are making a huge comeback. Whether they are throw backs to the early 1990s or just to the early years of the 2000s, if its old, it’s new. Since I began working in the fashion industry, I have seen many trends come and go. Here is my guide to the trends that have made their way back to the forefront of fashion.
The hottest summer trend for the past few seasons has been crop tops, a staple in clothing back in the early 2000s. Look for bold solid colors or printed styles with nature inspired and geometric patterns. Styles that are sleeveless look to be even more popular this season. Crop tops look great with long maxi skirts or even denim shorts. If you’re shy about trying a crop top, pair it with a high waisted bottom to help cover your stomach. You can make your own crop tops with scissors and a bit of heat setting fabric tape to seal the edge.
That’s right, the early 1990s are back and overalls are starting to be worn by celebrities and are trickling their way to mainstream fashion. You can find the classic overalls with shorts that pair nicely with a crop top underneath, or try a new spin on overalls that have a skinny jean leg. You can also toss a tank top under for an effortless look. This trend definitely takes some guts to try, but you could be the trendsetter in your neighborhood for giving this classic another shot.
The “phrase t-shirt,” trend that we saw in the early 2000s is back in full force, with witty and even inspiring sayings plastered on tees and tanks. I remember buying loads of these in high school and wearing them until threadbare. Graphic tees started making their come back in late winter and are appearing everywhere from high end retailers to budget outlets. If you’re bold, pick bright tees with bold sayings. If you’re a little more reserved, find ones in neutral tones with thinner fonts.
Yet another throwback to the early 1990s, jogger pants are making a huge comeback in both men’s and women’s fashion. Jogger pants are loose in the thigh and skinny to the ankle, and feel like a pair of pajamas while looking fashionable. Pair them with a crop top or graphic tee to complete the look. The great thing about joggers is they look good with almost any shoe, so you can start rocking the look even as the weather gets warmer.
While old trends are becoming new again, you can always pair them with modern elements to keep them looking fresh and modern. Grab accessories that are bold and bright but that are neutral enough to pair with a lot of outfits. Buying just one piece from a few trends can help you feel fashionable without feeling overly trendy. With retro looks expected to be in style through next winter, you can bet you will get a lot of wear out of your new pieces.
