dawah: spreading the faith
dua: supplication to God
hijab: Islamic dress code. Men must be covered navel to knee. Depending on who you ask, women must cover everything but the face, hands, and feet.
99 names for Allah: It is said that Allah has 99 names.
I once heard the concept of iman described as being like a battery that needs to be regularly recharged so it doesn’t die. So I have come up with some ideas for Muslims interested in recharging their faith batteries.
Stay Away from Muslims Who DON’T Recharge Your Iman
I’m not just talking about super sinners who have a way of destroying your faith in both Allah and mankind. I also mean the ” haram police.” This is a phrase coined by Imam Suhaib Webb for which he has since apologized for. However, I think it should live on. It’s a perfect way of describing hypercritical Muslims (they think everything is ” haram !”) who manage to accomplish the same consequences as the super sinners: they can destroy your faith in Allah and mankind. I actually think they are the same species as the super sinners; they are just a different breed. Stay away from both of these types. Your closest buddies should be the ones who facilitate your spiritual path.
Stay Away from Everyone Else Who Doesn’t Recharge Your Iman
I’m not saying you need to be cliquey. If Islam were a clique there would be zero Muslims on the planet. Dawah is important and part of dawah is having contact with people who are outside your comfort zone. But that doesn’t mean that you need to be besties with people who aren’t good for your faith. I like to think of Islam as orthopraxic. It is a lifestyle as much as it is a faith based religion. Dawah can be as simple as living a good life and upholding strong moral values. I remember hearing that even prayer can be a form of dawah if people can see you doing it, because they are seeing the religion in action. Muslims reach salvation through good works and not on faith alone. Do a good thing and spread dawah , but that doesn’t mean you need to make best friends with your local serial killer to do that.
Enjoy Your Worship
Pray the obligatory prayers, or try to make them up if you can. Pray extra prayers. Learn different duas . And just enjoy being close to Allah.
Enjoy Your Hijab
It’s a controversial subject, but if you are a female observing hijab then enjoy the feeling it gives you. If you only wear it when praying then enjoy that too. It’s all for Allah. He is Merciful, Compassionate, Loving, a Friend, an Avenger, the Light, and the Way (as well as all of his other 99 names ). Feel good about that.
P.S: Don’t let any other women in or out of hijab criticize you for your dress code decisions. After all, it’s not for them. And women do tend to be some of the biggest gossips and haters on the planet so be wary!
