The first recall I can remember was Tylenol. A woman tampered with the medication in order to commit murder. That scare was one of several that prompted all the tamper resistant features we see on products. I would imagine those responsible have been called a few names. It’s hard to get into pain medication when suffering from excruciating pain.
Because of my dual roles, master herbalist and writer, I spend a lot of time on health news websites. These sites often show recalls, and many times they are important…and not heavily reported in other places. Here are some current examples.
Undeclared Allergens: There are two recalls right now for products containing milk which isn’t declared on the package. Those are Eillien’s Candies, Inc. Dark Old Fashioned Sponge Candy and Dole Roasted Garlic Tomato Basil Soup. This recall may not be a problem for most, for those severely allergic to milk it could be life threatening.
Diabetes Test Strips: Diabetic Supply of Suncoast, Inc. is recalling some of its test strips due to a labeling error. The label does not give the correct unit information and consumers may think they will work on the incorrect equipment. The problem could give false readings, leading to problems with blood sugar levels.
Listeria: Lansal, Inc.(d.b.a. Hot Mama’s Foods) is recalling some packages of its Egg White Salad with Chives due to possible contamination with listeria. These products were sold at Trader Joe’s. Listeria is an organism that can cause a fatal infection for those with compromised immune systems, the very young and the very old. It can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.
Small Parts: Hamilton Beach is recalling a baby food maker due to a small part that could come loose and fall into the food. The pin in the stainless steel pin in the food bowl lid is the concern.
Car Seats: Anytime there is a car seat recall it’s important to know about it. Evenflo has a car seat recall do the latch. It gets stuck very easily and it can be quite difficult to get the child out of the seat. If there’s an accident, it could delay getting the child out of the vehicle.
I encourage everyone to spend a little time looking at recall lists. The information could save a life.
