Everyone has some free time, and different people prefer to spend their free time doing different things. These, as most people know, are called hobbies. In my opinion, one of the most self-fulfilling and fun hobbies in existence is learning an instrument. There are different reasons for this, and I want to take a look at all of them.
It makes other people happy. One of the funnest parts of playing guitar, to me, is watching other people love what you play. I’m sure this is the same way on any other instrument as well. When I hear someone singing along to what I am playing, it makes me feel very fulfilled. This is true at large parties, or on a stage, or even just sitting around with friends.
It makes you smarter. Several scientific studies have shown that learning an instrument literally makes you more intelligent. In students, as well as older people, musicians performed better on cognitive tests. These studies also showed that playing a musical instrument made large changes in the brain, particularly in the parts that controlled memory and hearing, and the part that controls your hands. Results also showed that learning an instrument can raise your IQ by 7 points.
It is therapeutic. Playing an instrument can be very relaxing. Just picking up a guitar and picking out a melody can change your mood drastically. If you’re sad and you start playing happy, upbeat music, you’re bound to at least be happy while playing your instrument.
You can make friends with it. It almost seems like a rule; If you’re a musician, you’ll meet other musicians. Musicians also tend to be the most interesting people in the world. As soon as you tell another guitarist that you play guitar, an hour long conversation about the genre of music you play will begin, and you’re bound to be friends for a long time.
You can do it anywhere. These days, people love to sit in their house and play with their ipads, or laptops, or whatever, which just happens to be the opposite of beneficial. With an instrument, you can sit out in the sun, and create your own sounds and moods, while at the same time literally getting smarter. On some days, I even go sit at the park in my town for hours and play guitar.
These are only a few reasons playing an instrument is fun. There are many, many more to be found. Some of them can’t even be explained. I hope this article has helped in your decision to learn to play an instrument. Thank you for reading.
