People who have rats as pets have their own vocabulary for some of the cute, funny and weird things that rats do. You may have heard some of these terms and not know what they meant, so here’s a crash course.
Heart Rat– The special bond that a rat owner has with a certain rat. You feel closer to this rat than the others.
Porphyrin– Is the red liquid that can sometimes be found around a rats nose and eyes. They will secrete it more when they are sick, nervous or older and have a hard time cleaning their faces.
Raisins– What we in the rat community jokingly refer to their ‘poo’ as. On more than one occasion I’ve said my rat left me some raisins in his cage for me to clean up.
Nekkid Rat– What a rat owner might refer to their hairless rat as.
Giving Kisses– What rat owners say their rats are doing when they lick them.
Scritches– When giving scritches to a rat, you sort of do a mixture of scratch and massage right behind the rats ears and down their back turning them into a mass of eye boggling happiness.
Marinating– The act of sleeping in ones own pee soaked bedding.
Squishy Rat– Pertaining to how big, soft and cuddly a rat is.
Pancake– How a rat looks when they lay splayed flat out on a flat surface.
Whether you are a rat owner or are thinking of becoming one, your rats will give you endless hours of pleasure with their antics. The more love they get, the more love they give. I’ve had rats as pets for about 20 years and I know I use these words all the time.
