As a professional makeup artist, I adore my ever growing collection of eyeshadows, pigments, liners and lipsticks. However, some of my clients don’t enjoy wearing much color. For these nature girls, I focus on two things, radiant skin and neutral makeup. Whether you want an everyday look or just a change from the standard eyeliner and three eyeshadows, these tips for radiant neutral looks are for you!
Let me be clear here. Successfully wearing neutral makeup look doesn’t mean you can’t wear any makeup. For radiance it’s beautiful skin; for your makeup strategy it’s about the strategic use of neutral colors. Okay, regardless of your hair color, you must choose neutrals that flatter your eye color. You probably already know this but just a reminder:
- Blue eyes: Earth tones
- Green eyes: Browns and gold (or any combination)
- Brown eyes: Earthy greens, browns and of course copper or gold
- Hazel: Always go for brown of brown shades.
Radiant Makeup Application
Whatever color you choose, remember to use the color sparingly, just enough to highlight the eye color. Define the eyes with a soft brush and use the shadow as an eyeliner. Sometimes, I dampen a small angled brush and then dip it in the eyeshadow. I apply it just above the lash line for definition. A light brown eyeliner is perfect for enhancing your natural beauty.
For natural radiance all over, skip the foundation and reach for the BB cream. These products “brighten” the skin and give you the perfect tin of color. I start with any dark spots first though. You may need to pay a little extra attention to hide spots. Finish with a brush of bronzer along the forehead, cheeks and chin. To avoid getting too much on your skin, tap the brush against your wrist first. Curl your lashes with an eyelash curler then carefully apply mascara to your lashes. Just one coat though! Remember you are after “natural radiance.”
Now for your lips-you’ve got to go nude. If you have a light skin color, choose a lipstick with a pinky undertone. Women with gorgeous olive skin should stick with beige or apricot shades. For dark skin, you can totally rock bronze!
Mistakes to Avoid
You can easily look washed out with an all-neutral look. To prevent this, do line your lips before applying lipstick and add a light blush shade to your cheeks. Sometimes just a touch of definition is all you need to enhance your features. Also don’t wear heavy makeup if you want a natural look. Heavy makeup coverage has its place but not when your goal is radiant natural looking makeup.
