I have traveled to several all inclusive resorts in Mexico over the past 10 years, including the Dreams in Puerto Vallarta, the Riu in Cabo, the Occidental in Cozumel and the Iberostar in Cozumel. As with any vacation, there are pros and cons. Here are a few specific to all inclusive resorts in Mexico.
Food and drink
Pro – When traveling with a large group, you don’t have to hem and haw over where and when to eat. Everyone can get on their own schedule and you don’t have to go far to do so. And. If you’re a big drinker, the drinks keep coming all day long.
Con – There is not a lot of variety. If you’re only staying for 3-4 days, this is fine. If you’re there for a week, you will get sick of the food options. Mexico isn’t exactly a foodies dream, but as long as you keep that in mind, you will be just fine. Save the fine dining for a food-centric US city like New Orleans.
Pro – There is no shortage of things to do at an all inclusive resort. Typically, the entertainment and non motorized water sports are included, so you can go to water aerobics in the morning, head out on a kayak in the afternoon and catch a beachside fire show in the evening.
Con – Some of the activities can be quite loud and or annoying. The staff’s job is to get you to participate, so they might ask you many, many times if you want to play beach volleyball or take a salsa lesson. Here’s where you say you have plans to go scuba diving or fishing!
Pro – If you’re on a budget, then all inclusive resorts are great. I have taken a five day, four night trip with air, room, meals and drinks for as low as $600 in the off season. Plus, you know that most of your expenses are paid for up front.
Con – This isn’t a big deal, but you will want to budget for and bring cash for tips. Just because it’s all inclusive doesn’t mean you can skimp on tipping. Everyone from the bartender to the maids will appreciate a few dollars throughout your stay. Most will gladly accept USD if you don’t plan on changing your money.
An all inclusive trip to Mexico is a fabulous way to unwind and relax in the sun. Just keep these expectations in mind for a stress-free holiday. Enjoy!
