Getting car insurance can be quite the hassle. I found a little red compact in the newspaper, checked it out and bought it on the spot. I was very excited. It was so cute, good on gas mileage and ran like a dream. Next I had to get insurance for it and there was a headache waiting to happen.
I couldn’t afford a lot and since I paid for the car without getting a loan. I didn’t need full coverage. I decided to get liability only. I am a good driver, only had one ticket in 20 years and had never been in an accident. You would think I could get a good rate. Come to find out that since I paid for everything in cash, I did not have a good credit rating and that ran up the prices.
I started by calling places online and found most of them were big companies, which advertise good rates, but I found them out of my spending range. One of the agents I talked to said, because my car was red, it was going to cost more because red cars, statically, are in more accidents. He went on to say that because I paid for everything in cash, my credit rating was low and this would also drive up the price. I was heartbroken but I knew I would have to do something.
I started calling everyone in the phone book. Most places, did comparison rates, but were only comparing the higher end companies. I finally found a couple of mom and pop companies which were local and they were more helpful and their prices were better. I found one that suited my price range and since they were local I could pop by on errand day to pay my bill.
If you are looking for car insurance and either can’t afford much and/or have a low credit score then I would suggest looking around town to your neighborhood insurance companies. I have found they have more reasonable rates and are a little more forgiving about credit rating scores. Some don’t even check scores just your driving records. We have to have insurance so why not support your neighborhood companies and keep the monies in town. I am sure that Mrs. Smith or Bob’s Insurance would greatly appreciate it and it’s a little easier on the wallet.
