Whether you’re bugging out, or perhaps bugging in, but need to provide shelter for more people that you can support in your housing, alternative shelter is a must have. Realistically, the best kind of shelter is a kind of shelter that you can buy or use modern materials to make. Most of the time when lean-to shelters or any other form of primitive shelter is made, it is there to serve a few days at most.
Sometimes more permanent shelter is needed. A good example is in the Walking Dead series when the house was not able to sustain the entire group. They were forced to sleep in tents in the yard. Although tents are a great source of shelter, they are not very permanent and will eventually break if overused. The absolute best option for permanent shelter after disaster is simply by making a new house or another room next to a house. There are many different ways to do this such as a log cabin or simply by framing the house with wood planks and nailing on boards to the sides to make walls. Also you can use mud and grass for insulation as well as make a fireplace etc.
Some short term options include tents as mentioned before. There are a few decent military surplus tents available for around $100 that will be spacious and offer you good value for your money. Only resort to primitive shelter when you have no other choice and your resources are exhausted. Not only does this create an uncomfortable sleeping arrangement, but also makes you more likely to be bitten by bugs. If you’re setting up a tent, try to camouflage your arrangement as best as possible to avoid being detected. You can buy camouflaged nets for around 40 dollars that you simply throw over your tent to camouflage it. This is a great idea. One advantage to resorting to primitive shelter is that you are less noticeable in the wilderness and you won’t need to pack any gear or spend time taking down your shelter.
If you are bugging in and decide to stay in your home, you might want to consider creating extra buildings inside your property. For example, make purpose built buildings such as watch towers, a barracks, an armory and food storage etc. This will make things easier to organize as well as give you alternative places to sleep if your house is damaged in any way.
