We all know that military surplus gear is perhaps one of the cheapest ways to acquire military goods on the modern market. This may be the case, how ever, is the gear good enough to use? Many of the clothing items, are in fact, outstanding values, along with military surplus tents, canteens, tools, cleaning kits etc. In general military surplus is an outstanding source of goods, how ever beware of certain items.
Many times, people will see gun part kits for sale which they think is an entire gun except you have to assemble it yourself. This is false. A gun part kit is simply used to take parts from to repair the gun you already have. So stay away from these kits unless you’re looking for a lot of extra parts for your old gun. Another ginormous mistake a lot of preppers and outdoor enthusiasts make is by buying surplus gas masks. These masks are seen everywhere, from magazines, to online stores, most of the time selling for under 40 dollars. This is not only misleading, but also a scam.
These masks are completely useless against any real biological threat. If you currently own a surplus gas mask take a look inside and see if you can find the date it was made. If you got it from a surplus store, it is most likely over 25 years old! Gas masks expire 10 years after creation. You cannot simply replace the filter. The filter needs to be replaced several times during normal use and does not effect the mask’s effectiveness at all after expiration.
Some military surplus items that are a good deal are bullets. Bullets are most likely my most bought item that is military surplus. More specifically 7.62x54r or the round shot by the Mosin Nagant. Most of the time you can buy a few hundred rounds for 70-80 dollars which is a great value for a bolt action rifle such as the Mosin. A great source of military surplus items is cheaperthandirt.com. Not only are their prices very competitive, but their range of items is quite large. You will find much luck shopping with this store for military surplus.
Another good item sold as military surplus is rifles. More specifically Mosin Nagants, SKS’s, and just about any bolt action rifle used in 20th century wars. These rifles can range anywhere from 80 dollars to 400 dollars. This is simply the best way to arm as many people as possible and get as much firepower for the money that you can. 10 people with mosin nagants could easily over come 1 man with an ar-15, and an ar-15 costs the same as about 10 mosins so keep that in mind.
