Laurent Koscielny is not good enough to start for France, but is good enough to start for Arsenal. Capable of great games and inconsistent ones, Laurent Koscielny is in Arsene Wenger’s target sight for a new a contract. Arsenal’s Manager is attempting to resign 28 year old central defender Laurent Koscielny to keep him in London for the rest of his prime.
In the French National Team Laurent Koscielny competes in a four way race for the two spots in the starting XI for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Because of his inconsistencies with les Bleus and his catastrophic nerve losing performance against Ukraine in the World Cup Playoffs, Koscielny would not be my starter.
However, Rafael Varane’s youth, competition with two elite central defenders Sergio Ramos and Pepe and injuries have not help his case. Koscielny’s regular playing time and consistent presence on the pitch with Arsenal might be a decisive factor that may push the legendary Didier Deschamps to have the Gunner as a starter.
What is certain, however, is that he will be in the selected 23 that will go to Brazil alongside Mamadou Sakho of Liverpool, Rafael Varane of Real Madrid and Philipe Mexes of AC Milan. But the uncertainty about the names of the two starting center backs remains the only hope for the Gunner. Another thing that is certain is that he should stay in Arsenal, and finish the season strong to further his case for the World Cup.
Arsenal needs stability and good players. Laurent Koscielny is a good player. Now, what he needs to do is work harder to become an elite defender for Arsenal and impose himself as a starter for France looking forward to its hosted 2016 European Championship.
