There are plenty of healthy benefits for your body if you start your day with a morning workout routine. It will wake you up and get your blood flowing because you’ll be increasing your heart rate during your workout. Since you’re essentially “jump-starting” your heart rate at an early hour, it will help you burn more calories throughout the day.
Depending on what type of workout you’re doing, it’s a smart idea to have a little snack or mini-meal before you get going. I like to alternate cardio and weight training days, but both are deserving of a small, pre-workout meal. It’s important that this small meal is rich in either protein, fiber or a healthy fat–it will help get you through your workout versus a simple carbohydrate.
Here are my favorite pre-workout morning meals for women.
One cup Greek-style yogurt
I like to keep a large 32-ounce container of non-fat plain or vanilla yogurt in my fridge. Eat a cup of this protein-rich yogurt to help you through a morning workout.
Egg white scramble
Over medium heat, cook two egg whites with any leftover veggies from your fridge. Serve with a dash or few of hot sauce.
Banana and yogurt smoothie
Blend one banana with one cup Greek yogurt and small handful ice. The banana will add a sweet boost to your yogurt.
Cover two eggs in cold water and bring to a boil. Once at a boil, cover and take off the heat for 15 minutes before peeling.
Peanut butter, berries and quinoa
Mix pre-made, plain quinoa with two tablespoons of peanut butter and mixed fresh berries of your choice.
Apple with almond butter and hemp seeds
Slice an apple and spread each with a small amount of almond butter and then roll in hemp seeds. The hemp seeds add fiber and crunch.
Half an avocado with salt and red pepper flakes
Halve and avocado and sprinkle sea salt and red pepper flakes over top. It sounds plain, but it’s delicious and will give your body a healthy fat for energy during your workout.
Finally, I’m an advocate for a cup of black coffee before or during a morning workout, but just one cup! Iced or hot, it will give you a healthy boost of energy.
